St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery is considered the oldest site of continuous worship in New York City and the second oldest church in the city.

The church site is officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a NYC landmark in 1966.

Peter Stuyvesant, the first governor of New Amsterdam, is buried in the churchyard under the family vault vault in 1660. African slaves and freemen worshiped as members of the chapel Stuyvesant built during the Dutch rule.

The church has also supported the active artistic community since the 1800s.
