Benedictine Academy Demonstration Rain Garden

History:
The Benedictine Academy rain garden was installed with funding from the New York - New Jersey Habor Estuary Program, New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium/New Jersey Sea Grant Extension Program and Future City, Inc. With this funding, three rain gardens were installed cooperatively by Future City, Inc. and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program in Essex and Union Counties. These rain gardens include Benedictine Academy, Third- Westminster Presbyterian Church, and St. Benedict's Preparatory School.
Type of Runoff Managed:
The rain garden manages stormwater runoff from a Benedictine Academy building via downspouts.
Installation:
Students and Future City, Inc. staff were present for the installation of the Benedictine Academy rain garden in May 2008. Community members and local business members provided equiptment and materials, and donated their time and expertise. Property managers were involved in site planning, development, and construction.
Maintenance:
The rain garden is maintained by the Benedictine Academy staff.
