Bird
Overview
Owner Jennifer Mankins opened the third outpost of Brooklyn-based mini-chain Bird in February 2009, renovating the same sprawling Williamsburg industrial space that once housed the boutique’s holiday pop-up shop. Racks of womenswear in cashmere, silk, and jersey span one wall, while a smaller selection of menswear includes sweaters, basics, and button-downs from A.P.C. and Paul Smith. Central shelves bear jewelry and vibrant home accents, like throws stitched from repurposed Indian saris, letterpress cards, and soy candles from Red Hook-based soapmaker Saipua. Mankins hand-picks women’s offerings from around 50 labels, including Tsumori Chisato, 3.1 phillip lim, Rachel Comey, and Steven Alan. She also ventures into high-end designer territory at the new store, stocking upscale items from Thakoon and Yigal Azrouel. Like at the first two locations, many of the wares have an ecoconscious slant, like natually dyed organic-cotton totes by Bodkin and animal-friendly pumps from Stella McCartney, and the woodsy-smelling space was constructed using green building materials. — Lauren Murrow
