According to the Red Hook Boaters there are three combined sewage overflow outfalls near Valentino Pier. When it rains and the sewers get flooded, storm water combines with untreated water in waste treatment facilities and it overflows into the Erie Basin Estuary. A test that Hook Productions conducted at Valentino Pier confirmed that fecal matter (sewage waste) is present in the Erie Basin Estuary. Fecal matter is not only unsanitary for the people of all ages kayaking in the water, it can be fatal to aquatic plants and animals and promote excessive algae growth.
