At the height of its prosperity in the 19th century, the Penllergare estate was an outstanding example of a picturesque romantic landscape, created for the enjoyment of its owners. Its creator was John Dillwyn Llewelyn, a man distinguished not only for his contribution to landscape design and horticulture, but also for his scientific experiments and pioneering photography. Today the estate is being managed and restored by local volunteers representing the Penllergare Trust.
The Observatory (built 1846) is grade II listed as an extremely rare example of a mid 19th century private observatory and is also being restored by the Trust. Address: Penllergare Valley Woods, Penllergaer, Swansea, SA4 9GS. Tel: 344224. www.penllergare.org
