Melcher House (228 Grove Street)
Overview
Also known as the Jacobs House, this historic Italianate Georgian house was built in 1800. Home of Frederick Melcher who lived there until the 1960's. He was an important figure in the publishing world and had many honors to his name. An editor of the Publisher's Weekly, he was also on the primary sponsors of the Newberry & Caldecott book awards. Melcher made nine visits to the White House, the latest being in 1962 under the John F. Kennedy administration as an adviser to the presidential library. he was a member of the Montclair Board of Education for fifteen years. The house is listed on the State Register of Historic Places.
