Pamlico Sound
Overview
Pamlico Sound is the largest lagoon along the U.S. East Coast. It is 80 miles long and 15 to 30 miles wide. Explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano mistook the sound for the Pacific Ocean.
Pamlico Sound is part of a large, interconnected network of lagoon estuaries that also includes Albemarle, Currituck, Croatan, Bogue, Core, and Roanoke Sounds.
